In 1870 the U.S. Army established a fort to assist the White Mountain Apache Tribe in peacefully protecting their lands.  At the same time the surrounding area was designated as a reservation for the tribe.  Chiefs Alchise and Diable served as scouts for soldiers from Fort Apache as they pursued the famous apache renegades Geronimo and Cochise.

Fort Apache recalls a turbulent period of both conflict and co-operation between various bands of the Western Apaches and the United States.
