The Canadian CL-84 experimental aircraft, with its tilt-wing technology, is capable of vertical take-off and landing. The purpose of the experiment was to develop a multi-functional long-range high-payload aircraft which, similar to a helicopter, did not require a runway, and could attain the high speed of an aeroplane. The CL-84 led to a much greater understanding of V/STOL technology, and pilots found the aircraft easy to handle. The "convertible plane" concept was later partially incorporated in the V-22 Osprey. Just like the original, when hovering, the model's rear engine is used to control the pitch attitude. It is also used to control the yaw motion, and the built-in 3-axis gyro system which was specially developed for the CL-84 continually steadies the aircraft in flight, providing excellent flight stability. During flight the complete wing can be tilted through 90°, allowing the model to be flown either as a helicopter or an aeroplane, just like the original.
